This
course only covers Chapter 4 (Technician Level). Separate courses,
Hazardous materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operational and
Hazardous Materials Incident Commander cover the competencies listed in
Chapter 2, Chapter 3 and Chapter 5. |

The
Technician Level |
|

|
Hazardous
materials technicians are those persons who respond to releases or
potential releases of hazardous materials for the purpose of controlling
the release. |
|

|
Hazardous materials technicians are
expected to use specialized chemical-protective clothing and specialized
control equipment. |
|

|
Hazardous
materials technicians shall be trained to meet all requirements at the
first responder awareness and operational levels before attempting this
course. |
|

|
In addition, according to the
standard, hazardous materials technicians shall meet training requirements
of OSHA or EPA, whichever are appropriate for their jurisdiction. |
|
Organization
of the Course |
|

|
The
course is designed for 40 hours of a combination of classroom time and
outdoor hands–on activities. |
|

|
This instructor outline follows the
objectives in NFPA 472, Chapter 4, Hazardous Materials Technician. The
goal of this course is to allow the technician to be able to : |
|

|
Analyze
a hazardous materials incident to determine the magnitude of the problem
in terms of outcomes by surveying the incident, collecting and
interpreting hazard and response information, determine the extent of
damage to containers, predict the likely behavior of materials when
released, and estimate the size of an endangered area. |
|

|
Plan
a response within the capabilities of available personnel, personnel
protective equipment, and control equipment. |
|

|
Implement
the planned response to favorably change the outcomes consistent with the
organization's SOPs and/or site safety plan |
