Fire
Service Instructor, Level - II Course |
Origin
of the Standard |

This
Instructor standard is one of the original four professional
qualifications standards that was developed after 1971 when the joint
Council of National Fire Service Organizations created the National
Professional Qualifications Board for the Fire Service. |

Professional
qualifications standards are now developed by the NFPA standards making
system. |

An
earlier special meeting of fire service leaders, the Wingspread Conference
in 1966, had begun to promote criteria for fire service professionalism. |

One
criterion discussed was "Professionalism begins with education." |

At
the same time, it is understood that the quality of any educational
program is only as good as its instructional staff. |

This
standard is designed to provide guidance for improving the qualifications
of any instructional staff. |

The
first edition of this standard was issued in 1976. It was revised by the
technical committee in 1981 and 1987. |

The
current version was released in 1992 and supercedes; previous editions. |
Organization
of the Course |

This
course is designed to meet the objectives in Level II of NFPA 1041. All
students must be given a copy of these objectives no later than the
introduction to the course. |

The
course is divided into an academic section and a practical section, in
which the student demonstrates what has been learned. |

The
pace of the course is necessarily rapid, considering what needs to be
addressed in a typical 40–hour period. |

An important consideration for being
able to move through the academic section is that students are notified of
required reading material that must be completed before coming to the
class. |
